FROM a little town in Ohio, Ethel Knight comes to live with her married sister in New York. A few weeks of flurried shopping prepare her for her introduction to the gay life of the city, and then all plans are cut short by her sister's illness and sudden death. In assuming charge of her sister's home and her small niece, Ethel is thrown into intimate association with her brother-in-law, Joe Lanler. Joe has always been fond of the young girl, so very different from Amy, his wife, and he comes in time to love her and to consider a second marriage. Married to Joe, Ethel finds that she has a very real rival in her sister's unseen presence. For Amy had made of Joe what she had willed. For her sake and to give her the luxuries she demanded, Joe had forsaken the ideals of his profession, architecture. to gamble in real estate and make big money. Ethel who cares nothing for these things or for Amy's friends or the kind of life she had led, hopes to turn him back and revive the man he had once been. The story follows her not unsuccessful struggle. At the very outset the reader notices Ernest Poole's altered mental outlook and perspective. He evinces a greater sophistication. One is the colorful, symbolic background of “The Harbor and the sedate environment of the solid generation portrayed in ‘His Family.’ Here the author is dealing with human passions and strifes amid the conventional things of everyday life. It is an agreeable entertaining story, brilliantly conceived. There are several strongly-drawn characters, and the portrayal of the confusion following Amy's sudden death is deftly done.
